The Alianza Sierra Madre accompanies the judicial and administrative defense of indigenous peoples’ human rights under its program on the human rights of indigenous peoples, and seeks the recognition of territorial rights for indigenous communities that have been the victims of fraudulent actions. While they have possessed the lands and territories where they have lived for many generations up to the present day, they have done so without titles. The situation of those peoples and communities has been aggravated by the granting of illegal logging permits for their forests, a situation that puts them in danger of the flaring of violence. The Alianza is working on two cases that are emblematic of this situation in the Sierra Tarahumara: ChoréachiandColoradas de la Virgen, both located in the municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
Along with the juridical-administrative actions we undertake, we also have developed a strategy for sensitizing and reaching political compromise with representatives of governmental institutions at the state and federal levels, with the goal of getting them to stop these violations and recognize indigenous peoples as citizens who are rights-holders.
This strategy is complemented by our work with human rights education for indigenous peoples, by providing workshops for training, promotion, and information, with an emphasis on producing audio programs for transmitting on the radio, as radio is one of the best ways to broadcast information throughout the Tarahumara region.
